A Growing Spiritual and Contemplative Consciousness

There is a growing spiritual and contemplative consciousness in this country and in the world as people search for more meaning and purpose in their lives. We refer to it as the Contemplative Living Movement.  It encompasses a variety of approaches to resolve the disunity and disintegration we are experiencing as individuals, families, and in the guiding institutions of society, whether it is in business, government, education, religion, media etc.

The Abbey of Gethsemani has given The Merton Institute forty acres of its property. We are in a year long process of discerning how to best use this land to advance the Institute’s mission and that of other organizations whose work ultimately contributes to improving the human condition and instilling values that inspire better personal choices, better leaders, better communities, better lives for all.

The gift of the forty acres presents an opportunity for local, national, and international learning and collaboration. While the Louisville region could be the international center of the Contemplative Living Movement, we believe, with its history and resources, it should and must be the center.
